A colleague had been ill for a long time and came back to the department after about two years. The chairholder had always been very committed to keeping her position and reintegrating her gently. I shared the office with her after her return. We are very good friends, and I was the only one fully aware of her illness. On the first day of her return, a male research assistant, a sociologist, appeared, stood behind us, and said, “Sure thing that you can return. Mr. XY (the chairholder) has it for long-haired women.” My colleague and friend couldn’t get a word out, tears in her eyes. How incredibly hurtful and humiliating, especially after such a long time of recovery and within a not quite stable phase.
