My doctoral supervisor offers me a part-time position as a research assistant, for which I terminate my doctoral scholarship. Upon commencing my job, he informs me that he will resign from his position within the next two months, which means that my position and that of my colleague, who started at the same time, will have no future. Before making his departure official, he announces in the plenary meeting of the institute that after generations of male assistants, he has finally hired two women. He gets applause from all of his colleagues. When he returns to the institute after his departure, he asks me to help him operate the copier and thanks me saying: “I’m lucky to have such an intelligent assistant.”
