A colleague, who is also a doctoral candidate, tells me about the guest lecture for students, which she organized, and which was held by Prof. X (male). After giving a short welcoming speech, she sits down with the audience, which, apart from her, consists exclusively of male engineering students. During the lecture, Prof. X addresses parts that are “installed in airplanes”—he pauses, looks at my colleague, the only woman and postgraduate in the room, and adds, “and in dishwashers. That might be of interest to you!” All present laugh. My colleague blushes and smiles awkwardly. Motivated by the laughs, he adds two more jokes at her expense within the proceeding lecture.
