Colleague X (female) is giving a presentation at a workshop. During the discussion, professor Y (the supervisor) asks a question harshly criticizing colleague X’s research topic as too affirmative. Colleague X answers the question confidently and challenges in a similarly sharp manner professor Y’s comment. Professor Y feels misunderstood and the previously very pleasant atmosphere changes to the negative immediately. A short time after, I go outside for a smoke. It is raining heavily and a group of about ten men are squeezed under the small canopy. As the only woman, I squeeze in between them. Several male colleagues pat the supervisor encouragingly on the back assuring him that he did not deserve this “hostility”, and that everyone knew anyway that he did not mean colleague X in particular.
