It was the last day of a big conference. I hadn’t made up my mind yet whether I wanted to attend the closing lecture or go to the city center/the train station to get home early to work on my MA-thesis. I asked the group of people I was with (all male PhDs): “Are you going to the last lecture?” – Everyone nodded: “What about you?” I replied: “Not sure. I might go to the city center…” Everyone started laughing. I silently asked one guy why everyone started laughing. He replied “Because it’s such a cliché: men do science and women go shopping”. I felt awful.
