My female colleague X and I, both PhD students, are at our first international conference, which is being held at a hotel on a Greek island. Professor Y is also there. He works at our university, too. We get along very well at the conference. We often sit together at meals, and he gives us attentive feedback after our respective presentations. Back in Germany, we sit together for lunch in a larger group of people working at our institute. We talk about the conference and its casual dress code. My colleague X says that we probably worried too much about our outfits beforehand. Professor Y responds: “Did you both have your little black dress with you? That would certainly have looked very good on you.”
