In a public discussion about the future of mobility and new models of car ownership where I am the only woman, men start explaining to me that I don’t know what I am talking about because “people always buy the cheapest option”. I live in a region where 50% of all jobs depend on the manufacture of luxury cars.
I have started actively bringing male PhD students to these discussions with me so they can experience how dismissively women are being treated in these settings. Their reaction is usually “What the fuck was that?”, to which I can only reply “That was what being a female engineer “in the wild” is like”.
